In the UK, a baby is lost every two minutes as a result of miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth.
This area has traditionally received sparse government funding and consequently we know little more about why these tragedies occur than we did 60 or 70 years ago.
As the UK's leading baby charity, Tommy’s is determined to provide the answers through dedicated research.
Tommy's Pregnancy Information Services
In the UK there are an estimated one million pregnancies every year. There is a high level of demand for information among pregnant women particularly in the crucial first 12 weeks of pregnancy which is a time when expectant mothers have minimal contact with their GP or midwife.
Surprisingly, there are few sources of accurate, up-to-date pregnancy health information that can be accessed from the home. Tommy’s Pregnancy Information Service works to fill this gap by providing accurate evidence-based information from qualified midwives via the phone, email, the web and through their free publications service.
To contact a Tommy's midwife please call 0870 777 30 60 (Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm) or email info@tommys.org.
Professor Andrew Shennan is Professor of Obstetrics and a consultant obstetrician, based in the Maternal and Fetal Research Unit at St Thomas' Hospital in London.
"At St. Thomas’ Hospital we are undertaking research into mechanisms of early birth, as well as the best way to detect, and to treat women.
This includes how to ascertain risk (history, scanning and swabs) and the types of treatment – different stitches such as abdominal sutures, and hormones.
We currently see 20 women each week. Most women have had multiple late pregnancy losses; 90% will have a successful pregnancy."
