Tommy’s Parent Friendly Awards allow you to nominate the organisation that you feel makes that extra effort to help alleviate the everyday pressure of being a parent or parent-to-be.
Every parent knows that the patter of tiny feet changes your life forever. Everyday activities like shopping or eating out can become a nightmare. Simply knowing which shops have pram access or good baby-changing facilities and where best to take your toddler for lunch, can be a blessing.
At ASDA, we believe that it is important to make the shopping experience as easy and pleasurable for parents and families as possible. We are therefore proud participants in this year's Tommy's Parent Friendly Awards.
Tommy's Parent Friendly Awards are completely independent and are voted for by you, the public. The aim of the Awards is to improve the overall standard of facilities on offer, to ensure that parents’ lives are less stressful. Just over half a million votes were cast by parents up and down the country during January and February 2008, in 18 categories including Best Supermarket, Best Family Restaurant and Best High Street Retailer. ASDA was chosen by parents across the UK as the most Parent Friendly Supermarket . As Gold Award winners for 'Best Retailer' with Mother & Baby magazine, Bounty's exclusive retailer and Britain's lowest priced supermarket, it is clear ASDA goes that extra mile.
ASDA has introduced key initiatives to ensure that parents have a hassle free shopping experience. We recently became the first supermarket to fine drivers who misuse parent and child bays. This has resulted in a 60% increase in spaces available for those mums and dads who really need them. ASDA offers baby changing facilities with free nappies, free baby food in all ASDA cafes, feeding rooms and a wide variety of parent and baby trolleys. So it's no wonder we were voted most Parent Friendly Retailer!!
Asda proudly sponsor the Hero Award. At the Parent Friendly Awards ceremony Dr. Linda Papadopoulos presented Tommy’s Hero Award to midwife Sally Bostock, who was nominated by patient and now friend Louise Kerkhof. Louise and husband Dirk suffered an agonising time when they lost a baby boy who was born prematurely at 27 weeks, they then went onto to have a healthy baby boy, Harrison James at 32 weeks – Harrison is now nearly three years old. Sadly, due to further pregnancy complications, Louise and Dirk went on to lose two more baby boys also born prematurely at 22 and 24 weeks. Throughout it all Louise’s midwife Sally remained a constant support and she went above and beyond the call of duty – she truly is their ‘hero’.
Dr. Linda Papadopoulos says:
"Once you’ve been through the sadness of pregnancy loss as I have and then the joy of a healthy pregnancy and birth - it makes you realise that you couldn’t have got through it without the individual help of several health professionals along the way.
But some of them go above and beyond the call of duty and Tommy’s wants to recognise their support." Dr. Linda Papadopoulos
